Summary
An orchard of possible post-medieval origin was located to the south and west of Townhill Farm, Broad Clyst. The distinctive remains of earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting, were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1960s. The ridges have probably been levelled.

The earthwork banks corresponded to a former orchard.

An orchard of possible post-medieval origin was located to the south and west of Townhill Farm, Broad Clyst. The distinctive remains of earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting, were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1960s.
The ridges corresponded to an orchard depicted within a T-shaped field on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map, and the earthwork banks reflected this shape, with banks on east to west and roughly north-north-east to south-south-west orientations.
The orchard had been largely cleared of trees by the 1940s when the underlying tree planting ridges were clearly visible as low earthwork banks. The ridges were not visible as earthworks on more recent aerial photographs and have probably been levelled.
