Summary

Orchards of possible post-medieval origin were located on the west facing combe slopes to the east of Sprydon Cottages, Broad Clyst. The distinctive remains of earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting, were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1960s but have probably now been largely levelled.

Orchards of possible post-medieval origin were located on the west facing combe slopes to the east of Sprydon Cottages, Broad Clyst. The distinctive remains of earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1960s. The earthwork banks correspond with a large area symbolised as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition Map of the 1880s-1890s. The underlying earthwork banks were visible on aerial photographs of 1946 under a light but sparse planting of trees. By 1967 all tree planting had been removed and the underlying earthwork banks were clearly visible in several parcels of land, the banks on different orientations with each plot. Digital images derived from lidar data of 2005 show that only two small areas of earthwork banks survive, in plots at SX989997 and SX990995, which remain planted as orchards.
