The distinctive remains of earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting on orchards were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards on the south-west facing slopes adjacent to Clayway, Broad Clyst. The orchard remained lightly planted up to 1967.
The earthwork banks correspond with an area symbolised as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition Map of the 1880s-1890s, and the orchard was therefore probably of post-medieval origin.
The earthwork banks remained visible on digital images derived from lidar data of 2005 and digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 and therefore probably survive as low earthwork banks.
