A semi-circular earthwork pit almost 35 metres in diameter was visible on aerial photographs of 1946 on the western edge of Station Road, to the north-west of Wishford Farm, Broad Clyst. The pit now is now enclosed within the boundary of the property labelled on the Ordnance Survey Mastermap as Merrie Brocke. The earthwork is interpreted as the remains of a former quarry or extractive pit of post-medieval to 19th century date. The pit does not correspond with any feature depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map and had probably therefore passed out of use prior to the 1840s. However it might have been contemporary with a number of nearby pits in use as ponds, but possibly originally created as quarries.
The pit remains visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005.
