Summary

An orchard of possible post-medieval to 19th century origin was located on the gentle north-facing slopes at Stevenstone Barton, Upton Pyne. The orchard was largely cleared of trees the second half of the 20th century. Limited tree planting and earthwork tree planting banks remained visible on arial photographs and digital images derived from lidar to the immediate north-east of Stevenstone Barton.

An orchard of possible post-medieval to 19th century origin was located on the gentle north-facing slopes at Stevenstone Barton, Upton Pyne, as depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The orchard remained densely planted on aerial photographs of 1946 and 1966, but had been largely cleared of trees and turned over to arable cultivation by 1999. Less than one hectare of orchard was retained and remained lightly planted immediately to the north and east of the farmstead. Within this area the distinctive remains of earthworks ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting remained visible on digital images derived from lidar data and aerial photographs of 2010.
