Orchard banks of probable post-medieval to modern date are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1945 onwards, at Venn’s Farm. An orchard is depicted here on the Sowton Parish Tithe Map of approximately 1838-48, although appears to have been completely cleared by the time of the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. Aerial photographs of 1945 show that a series of parallel northwest to southeast aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, are visible. These banks occupy an area of approximately 0.61 hectares of fairly level land on the southeast side of Venn’s Farm. The orchard banks are visible on aerial photographs up until 1966, although appear to have been completely levelled by 1988 following landscaping works.
