Possible weapon pits of Second World War date are visible as earthwork pit and banked features on aerial photographs of 1945 onwards, at Whipton. Three sets of earthworks are visible within an area of approximately 2.60 hectares, with each comprising an earthwork pit or trench which is flanked by an outer earthwork bank. The easternmost earthwork consists of two separate but adjacent earthwork pit and banked features which abut either side of a northwest to southeast aligned field boundary. Between these earthworks and the earthworks recorded to the northwest are a series of broad W-shaped vegetation marks suggestive of former barbed-wire entanglements. The features recorded here appear to suggest they either formed part of a localised defensive site, a military training site or a possible anti-aircraft site. Aerial photographs of 1946 and 1947 show that the earthworks to the northwest and south have been completely levelled, respectively, whilst the earthworks to the east remain visible in 1947, but have been levelled by 1955.
