Orchard banks of probable post-medieval to modern date are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, off Pinhoe Station. An orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, although by 1947, aerial photographs show that the orchard trees have been largely grubbed up, leaving a series of parallel northwest to southeast aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. These banks occupy an area of approximately 0.69 hectares of gentle southeast facing slope, within a single rectilinear shaped plot depicted on the First Edition OS map. The orchard banks are visible on aerial photographs of 1966, although their survival after this date is uncertain. The Ordnance Survey 2015 MasterMap depicts a playing field here which may suggest that the former orchard banks have been levelled.
Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.
The site of the former orchard is depicted as a playing field and the earthworks are likely to have been levelled.
