Evidence of a possible former orchard of probable post-medieval to 19th century origin was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as low and narrow earthwork banks on the north-west facing slopes overlooking the Exe Valley, to the south-west of Bridge Farm, Stoke Canon.
The banks were aligned roughly north-west to south-east, crossing the contours of the slope and were probably made to aid drainage towards the river valley.
The earthwork banks fell within a larger plot of land that was depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The trees had been cleared from the entire orchard and banks levelled in over half of the plot by 1946. The entire former orchard plot has now been redeveloped for housing and the banks have been levelled.
Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.
The former orchard plot now contains four dwellings.
