Summary

A group of pits and burnt areas excavated during a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline. All the features had charcoal-rich fills and they appear to have been the bases of hearths of unknown purpose. Radiocarbon dating places the pits firmly in the Roman period.

Site FTC16.01. A group of pits and burnt areas excavated during a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline. The pits tended to have charcoal-rich fills, predominantly oak, and appear to have been fire-pits or hearths used for metal working. Fragments of possible smithng hearth bottom came from burnt area 16.01.005

Site 25. Dun Cross, Dartington. A group of pits and burnt areas on the flat valley bottom. All the features had charcoal-rich fills which sampling showed to be mainly oak. They seem to have been the bases of hearths of unknown purpose. Calibrated radiocarbon dates of AD78-220 and AD26-134 were returned from charcoal from pits 16.01.007 and 009, placing the features firmly in the Roman period.
