An irregularly shaped pit was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 as an earthwork on the north-east facing slopes to the east of Windgate Farm, Combe Raleigh Parish. The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, and therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1880s. The relict pit abuts the line of a field boundary,
part of a field system characterised as being of medieval origin. It is therefore potentially of post-medieval to early 19th century date
