Wadhays Farmhouse. Late medieval origins, modernised and extended in 1621 (datestone), some C18 refurbishment, some minor C20 alterations.
Complex evolution. The present arrangement is U-plan; a south-facing main range, 3 rooms wide with a through passage to right of centre and rear left (west) and right (east) crosswings at right angles to the main range. A small yard to the rear (north), between the crosswings, is closed on the north side by a C17 farmbuilding. The core of the main range is a late medieval (late C15/early C16) open hall house of high quality of which 3 smoke-blackened are brace trusses survive over the higher (west) end.
Described as an exceptionally interesting large house of medieval origins, the medieval roof carpentry of a prticularly high quality. The mullioned windows, doorframes and porch are unusual survivals and the evolved plan form, including the early farmbuilding, reflects stages in the development of the house from the circa early C16 to the C18.

Visited 4th June 2000 by John Thorp. U shaped farmhouse with late medieval origins, and later alterations from 1621 and 18th century. Interesting 17th century front door to through passage with moulded frame and spandrels under flat roofed porch, probably early 19th century. Hipped at left end and gabled to right with red pantile roof and roughcast elevations. In good condition.

The farmhouse is built of stone rubble and now has modern roof of Roman tiles. The main block has a three room and cross passage plan but this layout appears to be the result of major alterations in 1621. The cross wall at the western end of the hall appears to be the original west end wall of the medieval house which had a two room and cross passage plan. Three original trusses survive in the roof, one against the wall giving two surviving bays. If the cross passage is in its original position then the hall was originally three bays long. A louver in the roof and smoke blackening on the timbers indicate that it was originally open to the roof and heated by an open hearth fire.
The results of a dendrochonological analysis undertaken on timbers in the house suggest a construction date of 1331-2 for the house, which is earlier than expected.
