Name: | Field Boundary East of Shaugh Farm |
---|
Summary
A shallow linear ditch and sections of bank were visible on aerial photographs of 1982 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as earthworks on the south-facing slopes immediately east of Shaugh Farm, Luppitt. The ditch was probably evidence of a removed field boundary, potentially of medieval date.

Full description
Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted boundary.
Ordnance Survey, 1982, OS/82218 V, OS/82218 V 1154-1155 28-AUG-1982 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359504.
A curvilinear earthwork ditch was visible. Map object based partly on this source.
Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.
This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.
Bluesky International, 2016, LiDAR DTM data (0.5m resolution) Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONBs: 3 transects, LIDAR ST1703 Bluesky International DTM 04-MAY-2016 (Cartographic). SDV359714.
A shallow linear ditch and slight earthwork banks were visible. Map object based partly on this source.
Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.
A shallow and slightly curvilinear ditch up to circa 4 metres wide and 110 metres long was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 as an earthwork former on the south-facing slopes immediately east of Shaugh Farm, Luppitt. Lidar data captured in 2016 revealed short lengths of earthwork bank surviving at either end of the ditch, and extending beyond the visible ditch to the south and north-east. The visible earthworks did not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppitt, so the removal of these features must predate circa 1840. However, the probable former boundary falls within the field pattern as depicted on the historic map, a system characterised by HLC as of probable medieval origin. The earthworks were therefore probably evidence of a removed field boundary potentially of medieval date.
