Summary

A curvilinear bank was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 as a low earthwork and pale cropmark on the south-facing slopes to the south of Shaugh Farm, Luppitt. The bank was probably evidence of a removed field boundary of medieval date.

The visible earthwork bank did not correspond with a depicted boundary.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

A curvilinear bank 3 to4 metres wide and 60 metres long was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as an earthwork on the south-facing slopes immediately below Woodhayes Cottage and Shaugh Cottage, Luppitt.
The bank did not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppitt, so its removal must predate circa 1840. However, the probable former boundary falls within the field pattern as depicted on the historic map and appears to abut, and continue from, the corner of the hedge line that marks the property boundary south of the cottages. The field pattern in this area has been characterised by HLC as of probable medieval origin. The bank is therefore probably evidence of a removed field boundary potentially of medieval date. The relict boundary remains just visible on aerial photographs of 1982 and might survive as a slight earthwork.
