Probable former field boundaries were visible on aerial photographs of 1982 as earthwork banks or scarps on the south west facing slopes adjacent to Kennel Copse, overlooking Ford Farm, Dalwood.
The earthworks defined a plot of land probably previously used as an orchard, recorded separately. The south-eastern earthwork corresponded with a boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Dalwood, but not the OS First Edition 25 inch map, supporting the interpretation that it was removed between circa 1840 and 1880. The north-western earthwork did not correspond with any depicted boundary, indicating that it had passed out of use prior to circa 1840. Both earthworks were curvilinear in plan and fell within a field system characterised by HLC as medieval enclosures based on strip fields. The relict earthworks are therefore interpreted as field boundaries of medieval origin that were removed by the mid to late 19th century.
The relict boundaries could not be identified with confidence on more recent images available to the survey but are likely to survive as subtle earthworks.
