Several small former extractive pits or quarries of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as earthwork pits on the west facing slopes within Spilcombe Copse, Monkton parish. Five irregularly shaped pits were clearly visible, measuring up to 20 metres across, four to the north of a larger quarry pit recorded at circa ST195007, one to the south. The function of the pits is unclear but they may have been prospecting pits associated with the larger quarry. A small number of smaller pits might be visible within the copse but could not be transcribed with confidence from the lidar imagery. The copse was well established on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map of circa 1880, and the pits therefore predate the late 19th century.
