A former extractive pit of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs and of 1982 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as an earthwork pit cut into the west-facing slopes south of Higher Northcote Farm, crossing the boundary between Monkton and Honiton Parishes. The pit is irregular in shape but measures up to circa 110 metres by 55 metres in size. It is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map and probably therefore ceased use prior to the 1880s. However, it might have been associated with the formerly extensive gravel extractive activity evidenced by further shallow earthworks and depicted on the historic maps immediately to the east.
