Possible former field boundaries of between medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1971 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the east of Hillhouse Farm. The linear earthwork banks are northeast to southwest and northwest to southeast aligned and are situated on gentle to moderate east facing slope. Whilst the earthworks were poorly defined, they would appear to form part of a rectilinear shaped land parcel. The digital Parish Tithe map appears to be un-surveyed here, so it is not possible to determine whether these field boundaries were extant by this time, although they do appear to have passed out of use by the time of the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The Historic Landscape Characterisation project has classified this area as comprising ‘medieval enclosures based on strip fields’.
