This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

A former probable extractive pit, possibly a marl pit, was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 and images derived from digital elevation data captured in 2006 as a rectilinear earthwork on the south-east facing slopes to the north-west of Grange Farm, Dunkeswell parish, measuring circa 34 by 25 metres in size. The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch Map or Tithe Map for Dunkeswell. This supports the interpretation that the pit had probably passed out of use by the mid-19th century. Marl pits were used to improve soil quality from the medieval period to 18th and 19th century. Four further probable marl pits were visible as relict earthworks in the immediate area, probably representing several phases of extraction.
