Narrow, shallow and roughly parallel curvilinear ditches were visible on aerial photographs of 1989 as subtle earthworks over nearly 0.6 hectares of gentle south-west facing slopes south of Lower Milton, overlooking the River Tale.
The ditches are tentatively interpreted as the gutters of a possible catch meadow irrigation system. Catch meadows were popular in the 19th century but many continued in use into the mid-20th century. The plot in which the ditches were visible was used as an orchard probably throughout the 19th century and any catch meadow in this field was therefore probably a short-lived 20th century creation.
The possible gutters were not identifiable as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and have probably been levelled.
