An irregularly shaped pit circa 45 by 35 metres in size was visible as an earthwork through orchard tree cover on aerial photograph of 1967 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features explicitly depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey, but did correspond closely with a small copse depicted within an orchard on the OS First Edition 25 inch map, named as Higher Orchard on the Tithe Apportionment for Payhembury.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century. A pond remains depicted in this location on the current OS MasterMap base layer.
