An irregularly shaped pit circa 60 by 35 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features explicitly depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey, but a pond within a copse does fall within the area of the pit on the OS First Edition 25 inch map. The pond was previously recorded as part of MDV113585. Neither pond not copse are shown on the Tithe Map for Payhembury but the plot in which the pit is located is named as Kitten Hole on the Tithe Apportionment.
This evidence supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and was subsequently turned over to woodland and a pond. A pit remains depicted as a pond on the current OS MasterMap base layer.

Ordnance Survey, 2017, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV359962.

Ponds marked, 327, 469 and 521 metres south-west of Blue Anchor Cross respectively . Map object based on this source.
