Summary

The remains of ridges made for tree planting and improved drainage probably of post-medieval to mid-19th century date were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1946 and digital images derived from lidar data acquired between 1998 and 2014, west, east and south of Clyst William Farm, Plymtree parish.

Plot 16 was listed as an orchard named Dippy Orchard, associated with the Clist William Farm estate.

The remains of parallel ridges circa 6 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks over an area of circa 0.4 ha on aerial photographs of 1946.
The visible banks fell within Plot 16 on the Tithe map and apportionments for Plymtree, listed as Dippy Orchard. It was depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First and Second Edition maps of circa 1880-90 and 1904-6.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century and remaining in use into the mid-20th century. The plot remained very lightly planted with trees on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010.
