Summary
Narrow curvilinear ditches were visible on aerial photographs of 1946 on the west facing slopes south of Hayne Farm, either side of the River Clyst. The ditches might be the remains of a simple catch meadow of possible 19th century date.

Narrow and shallow curvilinear ditches circa 90 metres long were visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as subtle earthworks on the gentle south-west facing slopes flanking the River Clyst, also the Payhembury and Plymtree parish boundary, south of Hayne Farm.
The ditches are tentatively interpreted as the gutters of possible simple catch meadow irrigation systems. Catch meadows were popular in the 19th century but many continued in use into the mid-20th century. No evidence of recent use was visible on the aerial photographs of November 1947.
The ditch north of the river was identifiable as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, but the southern ditch could not be seen and has probably been levelled.
