Summary

Linear ditches visible as earthworks on the floor of the River Tale valley to the south of Danes Mill, Plymtree parish on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards might be drainage ditches or evidence of a bedwork water meadow system of probable 19th century date.

Linear ditches were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards to the south of Danes Mill, Plymtree parish. The ditches were up to 3 metres wide and were arranged in a regular pattern over almost 6 hectares of the almost level floor of the River Tale valley.
The visible relict earthworks do not correspond with any water channels depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey but were broadly in keeping with the character of the drains depicted to the north and south. It is therefore possible that the ditches might be simple drainage channels of 19th century date. However, it does not seem probable that the majority of the channels would function as drains and it is possible they were laid out as a bedwork irrigation system of 19th century date
