Full description

Royal Air Force, 1946, RAF/CPE/UK/1823, RAF/CPE/UK/1823 RP 3296-3297 04-NOV-1946 (Aerial Photograph). SDV354994.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST0702 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

An irregularly shaped earthwork pit was visible.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A large irregularly shaped pit circa 105 by 54 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthwork did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey, but might be associated with an Old Marl Pit depicted and annotated on the OS First Edition 25 inch map immediately to the south.
The visible earthworks are probably the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
