Summary

Plot 174 was listed as an orchard, named higher Orchard.

The remains of parallel ridges circa 5 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks over an area of circa 0.4 ha on digital images derived from lidar acquired between 1998 and 2014.
The visible banks fell within Plot 174 on the Tithe map and apportionments for Payhembury, listed as Higher Orchard. The plot was depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First and Second Edition maps of circa 1880-90 and 1904-6. It remained lightly planted with trees in 1947.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century that remained in use into the mid-20th century.
