The remains of parallel ridges almost 5 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks over an area of circa 0.2 ha on aerial photographs of 1946.
The visible banks fell within Plot 111 on the Tithe map and apportionments for Plymtree, listed as Sawpit Orchard. The plot was depicted partly as an orchard, part other deciduous woodland, on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map of circa 1880-90. This might indicate it was being phased out of use at this time.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century that remained in use into the late-19th century.
The banks were not visible on earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and have probably been levelled.
