The remains of parallel ridges 7 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks over an area of circa 1.1 ha on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 to the south-east of Sanquishayes Farm, Plymtree parish.
The visible banks fell within a plot partly depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map of circa 1880-90 and the Second Edition map of circa 1904-1906, and listed as Three Acre Orchard on the Tithe Apportionments for Plymtree. The plot remained moderately planted on aerial photographs of the 1940s to 1960s.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage on an orchard dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century, that remained in use into the second half of the 20th century. The plot is now cleared of trees.
