The remains of parallel ridges 5 metres apart were visible as low earthwork banks over an area of circa 0.1 ha on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 to the south-west of The Old Forge, Norman’s Green, Plymtree parish.
The visible banks fell within plot 591 on the Tithe Apportionments for Plymtree, listed as Orchard House and Garden. The Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map of circa 1880-90 and the Second Edition map of circa 1904-1906 both depict the plot as the garden of a Smithy planted as an orchard.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage on a small domestic orchard dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century, that remained in use into the first half of the 20th century.
