Full description

A roughly triangular pit was visible as an earthwork.

The pit was visible as a subtle earthwork.

A roughly triangular pit circa 62 by 25 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946. The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the OS First Edition 25 inch map, but a small pond was shown within the area of the pit on the Tithe Map for Plymtree parish.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive that pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century and was subsequently used as a pond at least until circa 1840.
The pit remained visible as a very slight earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
