A possible former extractive pit of post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, on southeast facing slope at Blackaller Farm, Hemyock. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 42m in length by 37m in width. The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey. However, it did fall within an orchard plot named as Marlpit Orchard on the Tithe Apportionments for Hemyock. This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of an extractive pit that had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
