A possible former extractive pit of post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, at Pitt Orchard Copse, Culmstock. The sub-circular shaped earthwork measures approximately 50m in diameter. The visible earthworks are situated within Plot 103 on the Culmstock Parish Tithe map and recorded as ‘Pit Orchard Coppice’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century. The earthwork was not clearly visible on aerial photographs or other digital image made available to the survey owing to the dense tree cover here.
