A possible former extractive pit of post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, to the northeast of Nicholashayne Farm, Culmstock. The large sub-oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 92m in length by 57m in width and abuts a road along its northwest edge. The visible earthworks partly correspond with a coppice depicted in this location on the Culmstock Parish Tithe map of 1838-48, the trees likely being established within the pit following its abandonment. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century.
