A possible former extractive pit of post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, southwest of Whitehams Farm, Hemyock. The sub-oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 50m in length by 35m in width. The visible earthworks correspond with Plot 55 on the Hemyock Parish Tithe map which is recorded as ‘Headland Pit Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century.
