Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2008, north of Higher Ashculm, Hemyock. Plot 788 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe map is recorded as ‘Little Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is also depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century. The visible earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established for increased soil depth and improved drainage, are northwest to southeast aligned and occupy an area of approximately 0.05 hectares of northwest facing slope, within a single land parcel. An extraction pit (MDV119319), which likely pre-dates this orchard, was also recorded within this land parcel to the immediate southeast of the earthwork banks.
