A former extractive pit of possible post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2008, to the north of Higher Ashculm, Hemyock. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 55m in length by 30m in width and is located within a former orchard, recorded as ‘Little Orchard’ on the Parish Tithe Apportionment. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use by the mid-19th century. Evidence of this later orchard was recorded as a series of linear earthwork banks visible to the immediate northwest of the extractive pit (MDV119318).
