A former extractive pit of possible post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2008, to the south of Higher Heazle Farm, Clayhidon. The sub-rectilinear shaped earthwork measures approximately 40m in length by 20m in width and abuts, and so likely post-dates, an historic field boundary along its northern edge. The earthworks are located within land parcel 544 on the 1838-48 Parish Tithe map which is recorded as ‘Pit Close’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
