The earthworks are located within land parcel 280 which is recorded as ‘Shute Orchard’.

Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2008, southeast of Applehayes, Clayhidon. The earthworks are located within land parcel 280 on the Parish Tithe map which is recorded as ‘Shute Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is also depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. The earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established for increased soil depth and improved drainage, are northwest to southeast aligned and occupy an area of approximately 0.17 hectares of southeast facing slope, within a single land parcel.
