A narrow curvilinear ditch was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as an earthwork following the contours of the gentle west-facing slopes south of Webble Farm, Membury parish. The ditch is interpreted as the gutter of a simple catch meadow irrigation system. Catch meadows were popular in the 19th century but many continued in use into the mid-20th century. The ditch did not appear to have been recently used in April 1947, but had probably remained in use into the 20th century. The ditch remained identifiable as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
