The remains of parallel ridges were visible as very subtle earthwork banks in two former plots north of Godworthy Farm, Membury parish on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 1999 and lidar data captured in 2016.
The southern area of banks covered a plot of circa 0.1 ha area and the banks were circa 4 metres apart. The second area of banks, north of a possible bank defined trackway, recorded separately, covered a plot of circa 0.5 ha area and the banks were circa 7 metres apart.
The small southern are of banks fell within a larger plot depicted as an orchard depicted on the 19th and early 20th century maps available to the survey, listed as Plot 999, Brown Croft Orchard on the Tithe Map for Membury. The orchard had probably been recently cleared in 1947. The northern area of more widely spaced banks did not match a depicted orchard and had therefore been cleared prior to the 1840s.
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period into the 19th century.
