Summary

The northern of two mine shafts at the Ferro Ceramic Mine to north-east of Shaugh Bridge, depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition 25inch map. The shaft corresponds with a roughly circular pit or hollow identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.

The two shafts at the abandoned Dewerstone Iron Mine are both capped. The northern shaft (A1) is now 1.6 metres deep and 4 metres across and is partially enclosed by a spoil heap. The shaft is associated with an adit (B1) to the north-west which is 1.3 metres high by 2.2 metres wide at its mouth.

A roughly circular pit or hollow is identifiable as an earthwork approximately 7m in diameter on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The visible earthwork closely corresponds with a shaft depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition 25inch map and the current MasterMap base map, one of two at the Shaugh Prior Ferro Ceramic Mine, and might be evidence of subsidence associated with the shaft.
