Sampford Peverell ST029143
A cross is known to have stood on the high ground west of the church. Probably taken down during the Cromwellian period (1649 - 1660). It had certainly been removed by 1700. It is remembered in the names of the houses built opposite the site: 'High Cross' and 'Cross Hill Cottage'. It is believed that Lady Margaret Beaufort (1441 - 1509) was responsible for the building of the cross.
