Just downstream of the southern portal of the Morwelldown Tunnel, the canal water is now drawn off down a new channel, created in 1933-34 to carry water to the Morwellham Hydro-Electric Station. The channel is 330 metres long, terminating in a large, concrete-lined reservoir at the top of Sheepridge Wood, high above Morwellham's Lower Copper Quay, where the power station is located.
The channel is 3 metres deep by 2 metres wide and was cut into the rock with dynamite and air picks before being lined with shuttered concrete; two unlined channels take the water beneath the road from Rock to Morwellham, and through a ridge in the hillside to its south. A large guillotine sluice near the tunnel portal controls the flow of the water; the waste goes down the valley over a small adjoining weir.
Ordnance Survey, 2018, MasterMap 2018 (Cartographic). SDV360652.
Leat or conduit shown, partly underground.
