Summary

Two houses; originally part of a single property dating to at least the 17th century; evidence of original thatching and roof timbers noted in No. 4. Roof raised in the 19th century to encompass the extensions to the front. Nos. 3-4 Gregory Court appear to be earlier than Nos. 5-7 adjoining to the west.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The Tithe Map depiction shows a rectangular building at the rear of the houses on the street frontage here, joined at the south-eastern end to MDV114210. Part of the plot numbered 96; 'Cottages and garden' on the apportionment.

By the late 19th century, the property had been extended at the north-western end to join up to the house fronting onto the street (MDV114208). This north-western end is shown as a separate property from the rest of the range of buildings at the rear.

The early 20th century historic map looks to show all the subdivisions within the buildings that exist into modern times.

Additional information about layout of the gardens and sheds at the rear of Gregory's Court based on a conveyance document from 1975 when the property was split up and sold.
Cottages Nos. 3 and 4 appear to be older than Nos. 5-7 and may have originally been one rectangular building as No. 4 has a large fireplace that No. 3 lacks. A building surveyor stated that No. 4 has 17th century origins; based on the old roof frame and evidence of thatch noted. This is under the higher 19th century roof added to encompass the extensions to the front.
Until recently No. 3 Gregory's Court retained access to a shed at the rear for car parking.
