The remains of parallel earthwork ridges were visible on aerial photographs of 1946 to the south-west of Snow’s Cottage, Mamhead. The banks are spaced on average 7 metres apart and are aligned cross-contour. They are interpreted as banks made to enhance drainage and provide additional depth of soil within an orchard.
The banks coincide with an orchard depicted on the on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch first edition map and the plot remained lightly planted in 1946.The plot was not depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Mamhead, and are therefore likely to date to the second half of the 19th century.
The banks are not visible as earthworks on images derived from aerial photographs of 2015 and have possibly been levelled.
