Summary

Large granite milestone dating from about 1866. Set on south side of road in a low wall on the path, opposite No. 8. It is defaced, perhaps under the Removal of Direction Signs Order during the Second World War. The inscription should read, Ilfracombe/1/Combmartin/4. Combe Martin is spelt without the 'e'.

Site visit 22nd March 2018. Large granite milestone dating from about 1866. Set on south side of road in a low wall on the path, opposite No. 8. It is defaced and has no inscription but should read, Ilfracombe/1/Combmartin/4. In poor condition and at risk from further neglect. The milestone may have been defaced under the Removal of Direction Signs Order during the Second World War.
The A399 from Ilfracombe to Combe Martin was built and managed by the same named Turnpike Trust formed by an Act of Parliament in 1866. There should be four milestones along this route but only two have been located to date. Note that Combe Martin is spelt without the 'e'.
