Linear earthworks interpreted as tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval or 19th century orchard is visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the south of Ashbrook Lodge, Ipplepen. The parallel earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established for increased soil depth and improved drainage, are spaced 9m apart and occupy an area of approximately 0.77 hectares of northeast facing slope. They correspond with land parcel 1199 on the 1842 Parish Tithe Map recorded as ‘Garden Orchard’ on the 1839 Tithe Apportionment and an orchard is shown in this location on both the First and Second Edition Ordnance Survey maps, although had evidently largely passed out of use by the mid-20th century and has been completely cleared by 1999.
