Linear earthwork banks, circa 5m in width, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the south of Dainton Elms Cross, Ipplepen. The earthworks are broadly north to south and east to west aligned and partly define a number of narrow, rectilinear enclosures. The earthworks are in keeping with the historic field pattern depicted in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields, although only part correspond with field boundaries shown on this map. The earthworks are therefore interpreted as relict field boundaries of medieval date which had largely passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
