Summary

Two adjacent granite boundary stones associated with Dartmoor Prison. One is flat topped and uninscribed. The other has a rounded top and is inscribed "DCP" (Directors of Convict Prisons) on it northern face.

The inscribed stone (Riley, 1994) is one of a group related to Dartmoor Prison.

(11/07/1994) Two boundary stones are located at the north-eastern corner of the prison newtake at SX58857729. The western stone, close to the fence corner, is a rough moorstone block which measures 0.85 metres high, 0.3 metres wide and 0.15 metres thick. It is flat-topped and leans slightly to the west; no inscription is visible. Two metres to the east of this stone is a second boundary stone. It is a round-topped, dressed granite block and measures 0.5 metres high, 0.2 metres wide and 0.2 metres thick. The letters "DCP", 0.05 metres high, are inscribed on its northern face. The letters refer to "Directors of Convict Prisons" (Brewer 1986, 69).

Erected after 1867 when the enlarged bounds of the prison were marked with 'DCP' stones. Inscribed 'DCP'. Marked on plan.
